How AHJ code adoption works

Every Texas city or county that has adopted a fire code does so by ordinance — they reference a specific edition of the International Fire Code (IFC) and the International Building Code (IBC) and amend specific sections via local amendments. The edition adopted is the one your project must comply with, not necessarily the newest published edition.

Example: as of May 2026, McKinney has adopted the 2024 IFC (effective October 1, 2025), while Dallas is still on the 2021 IFC. A sprinkler design that passes McKinney plan review under 2024 IFC may need adjustment to pass Dallas review under 2021 IFC — the codes are not identical edition-to-edition.

For Texas-administered occupancies (state-owned, certain healthcare, certain regulated industries), the Texas State Fire Marshal's Office (SFMO) enforces under NFPA 1-2021 and NFPA 101-2021 per 28 TAC Chapter 34.
