Industry Resources

The code bodies, regulators, and trade organizations that govern fire protection in Texas โ€” with direct links so you can find what you need without digging.

Code Bodies

NFPA โ€” National Fire Protection Association

NFPA publishes the standards every fire-protection system is designed and inspected against โ€” NFPA 13 (sprinkler), NFPA 25 (ITM), NFPA 72 (alarm), NFPA 2001 (clean agent), NFPA 96 (kitchen), and ~1,500 more.

ICC โ€” International Code Council

ICC publishes the International Building Code (IBC) and International Fire Code (IFC), which Texas cities adopt by ordinance. ICC also publishes the IRC (residential), IMC (mechanical), and IPC (plumbing).

Texas State Regulators

Texas State Fire Marshal's Office (SFMO)

The SFMO administers the state fire-protection licensing program (alarm, sprinkler, extinguisher contractor and individual licenses) and enforces fire code on state-administered occupancies under Texas Administrative Code Title 28, Chapter 34.

SFMO enforces NFPA 1-2021 and NFPA 101-2021 on Texas-administered occupancies. Local AHJs adopt their own editions for everyone else.

FCC โ€” Federal Communications Commission

The FCC licenses radio frequencies used by ERCES / BDA systems and public-safety repeater equipment under 47 CFR Part 90. ERCES commissioning requires FCC GROL-licensed personnel (which Joel holds).
