IFC §510.6 doesn't stop at install. Every year your ERCES / BDA system needs a functional test. Every five years — or after any significant RF-environment change — the full survey and recertification. Miss one and the AHJ can pull your ERCES acceptance letter. We take that off your calendar.
What IFC §510.6 actually requires
- Annual functional test. A trained technician verifies the ERCES / BDA amplifier, all donor and service antennas, batteries, monitoring, and alarm interfaces are operational. Result: a written functional-test report filed with your AHJ.
- Full re-survey after significant RF-environment changes. A new building next door, a tenant renovation with heavy metal partitions, a rooftop-antenna change at the donor site — any of these can shift coverage below the NFPA 1225 threshold and require a fresh grid survey.
- Full recertification every 5 years (most Texas AHJs). A complete grid survey re-verifying every 40×40 ft square hits −95 dBm inbound/outbound, plus 100% coverage in critical areas. Same rigor as the original acceptance test.
- Battery replacement per manufacturer schedule. UL 2524 BDAs need battery replacement typically every 3–5 years. Miss it and the system goes into supervisory alarm — and your monitoring company logs it, which means the AHJ can see it.

Common questions
Do we need to be a Zion install customer to get annual testing?
No. We test ERCES / BDA systems we didn't install. In fact, most owners who come to us for the annual are inheriting a system installed by someone else — often with unclear documentation, missing acceptance-test records, or an AHJ report format the original installer never delivered. We can catch you up on all of that.
What if we've missed our annual for a year or two?
It happens. Call us. Some Texas AHJs will accept a make-up functional test if the building was demonstrably operating fine in the interim. Others will require a full re-survey. We'll tell you what your specific AHJ will actually accept.
How is annual testing priced?
$3,500 – $12,000/year for the annual functional test, depending on building size and AHJ. The 5-year full recertification is priced separately (essentially a fresh survey — roughly what the original survey cost, adjusted for building age and drift).
